Huawei Nova 9 SE Review
The trade restriction that Huawei has been under for years hasn’t deterred them from being one of the most well-known businesses in the premium mid-range smartphone industry.
The Nova series is one of their most popular, and they’ve now produced a cheaper version of the more powerful Nova 9, the SE. Quad-camera setup on the back, Qualcomm Snapdragon 680 SOC, and 4,000mAh battery with 66W rapid charging make this phone one of the most powerful. Here are our initial impressions of the smartphone.
Let’s Look at The Design
First and foremost, let’s discuss the aesthetics of the piece. With a back that shimmers depending on the angle of light and a glossy finish, you’ll feel inclined to keep your fingers away from it at first to maintain its perfect appearance. We also notice the protruding camera and some Nova branding on the phone’s rear. This phone’s front panel is 6.78 inches in size and has a punch-hole for the selfie camera and an earpiece built into it. Our favourite thing about it is its fashionable and exquisite aesthetic, but it also feels and looks high-end. In addition to the Crystal Blue colour, Pearl White and Midnight Black options are also available if you prefer a more understated look.
Connectivity
For connectivity, the power/lock button, which also serves as a fingerprint scanner, and the volume rocker are located on the right side; otherwise, the left side is empty.
However, the bottom of the device houses the USB Type-C port and the call microphone and speaker grilles. Finally, the secondary microphone and the dual hybrid SIM card slot are located at the top of this phone. All buttons are located towards the middle of the frame, so those with little hands won’t have any trouble using this device.
Display Overview
The display consists of a 6.78-inch IPS LCD panel with a 2388 x 1080 and 387 PPI resolution. The 90 Hz refresh rate on the display does improve the whole experience. To make it look more modern, it has very slim bezels on all sides and a chin a little larger than average. Like an LCD screen, the display is bright enough for outdoor use and generates vibrant colours, making it excellent for watching multimedia material.
Chipset and Performance
The Qualcomm Snapdragon 680 SoC, Adreno 610 GPU, 128GB of storage, and 8GB of RAM all make the Huawei Nova 9 SE what it is. Using the device for basic multitasking and playing graphically heavy games hasn’t caused any issues yet, but we’ll have to wait a few more weeks to see how it does in those situations.
Camera
The Huawei Nova 9 SE has a 108MP wide-angle, 8MP ultrawide, 2MP macro, and 2MP depth-sensing camera onboard. Here are a few examples of what we captured with the 16MP wide lens when taking selfies.
Battery
On paper, this smartphone can be charged from 0% to 75% in just 20 minutes, thanks to a 4,000mAh battery that supports 66W rapid charging. Since the US has prevented the corporation from obtaining 5G chips, one disadvantage of this device is that it lacks 5G connectivity. This could be a deal-breaker for some, especially since 5G connectivity has been widely available in the country. 4G, on the other hand, is a fast and dependable bandwidth that is available.
Software
It’s powered by Android 11 under the hood, with MIUI 12 on top. Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Tiktok are all pre-installed on the phone. Additionally, there are pieces of bloatware that are simple to remove.
Conclusion
The Huawei Nova 9 SE redefines the term “midrange.” Typically, Huawei compensates for its software shortcomings by being near-perfect everywhere else. And while it generally looks and performs well, the customary Huawei trademarks of greatness are missing. It seems like a punch that lands but lacks the force to do much damage.
However, it’s difficult not to search around and easily find a better phone in its price range. There are the Xiaomi Redmi Note 11 series and, to a lesser extent, the Vivo Y21T.
